Alabama Grade IV Water Operator Practice Exam

In the context of a gravity filter, media loss typically indicates that the filtration media is being washed away or has been disturbed to the point where its integrity and function are compromised. Raising the wash-water trough level is a strategic action that helps manage the backwash process. By elevating the wash-water trough, the flow of backwash water can be adjusted to ensure that the media is adequately supported during the backwashing process. This can help minimize further media loss and promote effective resuspension and redistribution of the filtration media.

This approach is important because maintaining the right level not only preserves the filter media but also optimizes the backwash process to ensure that a proper cleaning of the filter occurs without exacerbating the issue. Managing water levels is a key maintenance aspect to ensure that the gravity filter continues to operate efficiently and effectively.
